Winter Operations at WMRA

At West Michigan Regional Airport, keeping our runway and taxiways safe and operational during Michigan’s snowy winters is one of our top priorities. Rather than relying solely on individual pieces of equipment, WMRA has adopted a comprehensive Snow and Ice Control Plan (SICP) that emphasizes safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Our winter operations approach includes:

  • Clear Priorities: Runway 08/26 and Taxiway A are cleared first to ensure aircraft operations remain possible even during heavy snowfall.
  • Efficient Response: Snow and ice removal begins as soon as conditions warrant, with a goal of maintaining surfaces to a “no worse than wet” condition whenever possible.
  • Flexible Resources: Coordinating removal operations around tenant schedules to allocate staff and equipment when arrivals and departures are expected.
  • Safety Monitoring: Conditions are continuously assessed, and runway condition reports (RwyCCs) are issued through the FAA Digital NOTAM system.

Our current winter equipment includes:

  • Snow Brush Truck with Brush & Belly Blade
  • Aircraft Deicing Truck
  • Sand/Solid Deicing Chemical Application Truck
  • Two front-mounted plow trucks
