WMRA Contractors Win Asphalt Paving Award for Resurfaced Airport Runway

2021 Quality in Construction (QIC) Award

Last Spring we renovated our airport runway with Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Our amazing contractors used 19,156 tons of asphalt to replace all 6,002 feet of our runway; removing, replacing, and resurfacing the asphalt for a smooth and consistent runway that’s felt by everyone who flies in.

“You know that [the airport] is investing. We have this incredible new runway with ILS and GPS and it’s just something that draws people in.”

– Bill Sandman of Nexus, airport tenant

The reconstruction of the runway just won the 2021 Quality in Construction (QIC) Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association, making it the second award our runway received last year.

2021 Runway Reconstruction Project

Rieth-Riley Construction completed our runway project in May 2021. Due to their excellent and expedient work, the reconstruction project only required two and a half weeks of closure to completely repave all 6,002 feet of runway.

Funds for the project came from the Federal Aviation Administration, Michigan Department of Transportation, and WMRA’s dedicated airport millage and airport fees from pilots, companies, and airport tenants.

Check out our recent Annual Report to learn more about our 2021 runway and energy project!

“To be a competitive airport and provide the critical services that our community needs, we have to maintain that infrastructure.”
